Work Incentives and Planning Assistance

You, or somebody you know, may be receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI/SSDAC/DWB) and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The thought of how work could affect those benefits may be too scary to fathom. The truth is, work will most likely impact a recipient's benefits. That doesn't necessarily mean for the worse.

RSI operates a grant project funded by the Social Security Administration to provide Benefit Planning Assistance and Outreach Services to individuals receiving SSI and SSDI. The purpose of the program is to give beneficiaries accurate information regarding their benefits and how working may impact the benefits they receive. RSI provides this service to beneficiaries across the state of North Dakota.

Through the years, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has drastically improved ways for a Social Security beneficiary to give work a try without fear of losing their benefits. It is important to understand that every situation is different and working with a person on a one to one basis is the most thorough and beneficial way to go. Work Incentives were established so people receiving benefits will want to work, without fear of losing their benefits or allow for a smooth transition off of benefits.

Some of the options included starting a Plan for Achieving Self Support (PASS) which allows an individual to shelter income while completing a work goal. An individual may be working, but is paying many out of pocket expenses to achieve independence. Impairment Related Work Expenses (IRWE), may recover some of the work-related expenses and even lower their "monthly earnings" which would put them below the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) level. There are Blind Work Expenses (BWE), Subsidies, a Trial Work Period (TWP), and Continued Medicaid Eligibility (1619b) for SSI recipients whose earnings may become too high for a SSI cash payment. A Benefit Specialist has been trained by Social Security to have the knowledge of the SSA rules and regulations. Contact us for information about these and other work incentives.
