SSDI Beneficiaries

SSDI stands for Social Security Disability Insurance. SSDI is for individuals who have established a work record and have contributed taxes to Social Security. The amount a person receives in SSDI is dependent upon the amount they have contributed to the Social Security Trust Fund. SSDI is a Title II program that is calculated differently than SSI. Work impacts persons receiving SSDI by first calculating a nine-month Trial Work Period. After a persons Trial Work Period (9 months in a 5 year rolling period where an individual works over a certain dollar amount ($720 in 2012)), an individual would then move into a 36 month Extended Period of Eligibility. During that time, an individual would receive a check from Social Security when their earnings are below Substantial Gainful Activity, and not receive a check when their earnings are above SGA. New work incentives are available under the Ticket to Work program that will help protect an individual's medical coverage.

  • Higher SGA level for Beneficiaries who are Blind
  • Trial Work Period (TWP)
  • Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE)
  • Impairment Related Work Expenses (IRWE)
  • Subsidy
  • Medicare for People with Disabilities who Work
  • Section 301 Vocational Rehabilitation Client
  • Expedited Reinstatement of Benefits (ExR)
  • Extended Medicare
  • State Medicaid Buy-In "Workers With Disabilities"
  • Plan for Achieving Self-Support (PASS). - Although PASS is legislatively a Title XVI Work Incentive, Title II Beneficiaries can use their cash benefits to pay for PASS expenditures only if the employment goal will likely result in earning above SGA or to replace current benefits, which ever is higher.
