People with Disabilities and the Affordable Care Act :

If you’re living with a disability, private health insurance may be hard to come by. Even if you can afford to buy it, it probably doesn’t cover all of your needs. Worrying about where to get c overage and the cost of your care is the last thing you want to do. The Affordable Care Act is expanding your options for health insurance and making them more affordable.

Top Things to Know for people with Disabilities:

Under the health care law, job-based and new individual plans are no longer allowed to deny or exclude coverage to any child under age 19 based on a pre-existing condition, including a disability.

Starting in 2014, these same plans won’t be able to exclude anyone from coverage or charge a higher premium for a pre-existing condition including a disability.

Insurance companies can no longer drop you when you get sick just because you made a mistake on your coverage application.

Insurance companies can no longer impose lifetime dollar limits on your coverage.

Medicaid covers many people with disabilities now, and in the future it will provide insurance to even more Americans. Starting in 2014, most adults under age 65 with incomes up to about $15,000.00 per year for a single individual (higher income for couple/families with children) will qualify for Medicaid in every state. State Medicaid programs will be also be able to offer additional services to help those who need long –term care at home and in the community.

~Terry

Recoveree Connection

Recoveree Connection is through a contract from the North Dakota Department Division of Drug & Alcohol. Recoveree Connection contacts people who have requested support in their recovery from substance abuse. Participants are offered enrollment by an addiction service provider, parole or probation officer, or by self referral. Recoverees specify the days and times they would like to receive calls. Volunteers call and visit with participants to see how they are doing. Volunteers have a resource manual that includes information on local support groups, treatment centers, counseling offices, and on line recovery sites.

Over 6,000 people in North Dakota will receive treatment for drug and alcohol problems in the current calendar year. Many of the Recoverees relapse within the first three or four months. The main objective of the Recoveree Connection is to help people through that crucial first phase of recovery.

Recoveree Connection calls are based on one person talking to another person sharing help, hope, support and resources to make a good start in the changing process of recovery. Recoveree Connection is always looking for volunteers!

~ Colman Quill~
Recoveree Connection Coordinator

Job Ready Program
RSI was awarded a state contract from Division of Vocational Rehabilitation for a Job Ready Program for people with disabilities. This program is on its second year due to the overwhelming need and success. So many past participants are very thankful for given the opportunity to participate in this program. Some of those, whom have never worked, currently employed or have had a history of unsuccessful employment.

The Job Ready Program is aimed at creating a greater awareness of appropriate work place behavior and etiquette, to produce higher success rates for job seekers and also for those whom are currently employed. All employers are looking for someone who is dependable, flexible, positive attitude, creative, honest, trustworthy, motivated, experienced, can problem solve, be a team player and most importantly is willing to learn.

The program is very adaptable and is designed to accommodate a wide variety of areas of improvement. It’s a three week training which is individualized for each participant to help them develop skills needed to be successful at work. We also incorporate one-on-one appointments with each participant so they may practice their interviewing skills and in return gain more confidence.

Karen Fleming,
Job Ready
Program Coordinator
